Frequently Asked Questions
Since we are a small organization, 100% of your donation goes towards helping the dogs, whether it be spay or neuter, vaccinations, medications, surgery or food, we use your money for that. We don’t have any admin costs as we are 100% volunteer.
We just are. But to answer more fully, I’m going to direct you to our blog post:
How to Determine if an Organization is Worthy of Your Donation
Hundreds, maybe thousands! Karin has been rescuing dogs for 15+ years from the streets of Cancun. She has sent dozens to Canada and the US, either with visitors determined to take home a dog, or to people waiting to accept them to foster or adopt themselves.
Since teaming up with Toree in the US, the two ladies have sent 41 dogs to the US to Lake Tahoe, where they have all been adopted into forever homes.
Karin got started when she found a batch of puppies with their mother at the side of her house. Being who she is, she brought them in and cared for them.
Then someone told her about another batch of puppies….one thing led to another!
Toree visited Cancun in the fall of 2019 and saw the dogs on the street. She was drawn to them and decided she was going to do something to help. When she returned to the US, she did some research and made a plan to go back. That’s when she found Karin and the rest is history.
Like any nonprofit organization, we rely on donations, sponsorships and grants. We are growing, so we have very little of any of that! We are trying to grow legs but we need your help. Even a small donation makes a difference and we really appreciate when people share our information, our stories or our posts.
Most organizations rely on donations to cover costs like veterinary care, food and shelter. Since we are small and trying to grow, most of our expense is covered by the founders, Toree and Karin. We are hoping that you can help to change that!
Yes, as long as they have the distinction of being a tax-exempt 501c3, which we are.
The short answer: We can’t not!
Truthfully, when you see the need, you can’t un-see it. As it turns out, it’s very fulfilling work.
Karin operates out of her facility in Cancun and Toree operates out of her home at Lake Tahoe. The Foundation is incorporated in the US.
Absolutely yes. We rescue dogs and they stay with us as long as they need to, until we find them homes. If we don’t find homes, they stay and become “lifers”. We are committed to our dogs.
We find out about dogs in need in a variety of ways:
- By responding to calls from the public for help with dogs who are abused
- By responding to calls from the public regarding puppies born in their neighborhoods or by their businesses
- By trolling the streets, looking for dogs who are approachable
- By coordinating with the municipal shelter for dogs they have captured
- By capturing females in heat being hounded by restless males
There are many ways:
- Donate
- Sponsor a spay/neuter clinic
- Adopt
- Foster
- Volunteer
- At the shelter
- As a foster
- Help to post and share
- Purchase our merchandise and wear it proudly!

That varies considerably. Most dogs need extensive medical care. They all need to be spayed/neutered, dewormed and deloused. Some have broken bones. Many of them are severely malnourished and need to be coaxed back to health with good and plentiful food.
The dogs that are flown to another location have additional expenses. They all need to fly with a volunteer, have the proper paperwork, sometimes there is a hotel stay. They need to be picked up from the airport and transported to their final destination. It gets expensive.
Our adoption fee for the dogs who leave the country is typically $600 and that covers only PART of the expense.
Depending where you are, contact your local animal control or a rescue organization to report the situation.
If you see an animal in Cancun, you can contact us and we can TRY to help. We get many calls for help with animals and in Cancun, it is mostly Karin who has to respond. But you can try. We don’t like to turn our backs on an animal in need and if we can’t help directly, we might be able to point you in the right direction.

If you can help the animal yourself, even better! We will be happy to give you tips and help in any way that we can.
You can volunteer by assisting with animal care: dog walking, training, bathing, feeding, clean up; fundraising, or administrative tasks. There are more–we will find something for you!

There are many organizations at work (mostly small and grassroots like us) in Mexico, trying to help as many street dogs (and cats) as they can. Search social media and you will find someone to help in their mission.
We always need pet food, cleaning supplies, towels, blankets, toys, grooming supplies, dog crates, leashes and harnesses. And don’t forget money!
For every dog that goes to a foster, one more dog gets a chance to get off the street. We welcome you as a foster. First, we ask you to fill out the adoption application, we will interview you over the phone and will ask you for a video of your home and yard. We have rigorous policies in place to make sure our dogs go to a healthy and loving environment, whether as a foster or to a forever home.
Every organization has their own process, but we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t screen people for suitability before adopting.
