The first time we saw Pepe, he was just a shadow of what a dog should be. Someone had tipped us off about a dog chained to an old tire on the outskirts of Cancún, barely moving, his ribs poking through his filthy, matted fur. When we arrived, the sight broke our hearts—his eyes, dull and lifeless, barely lifted to meet ours.
But definitely there was a spirit living in Pepe telling us to save him.
His body was covered in sores, and the heavy chain around his neck had rubbed his skin raw. Flies buzzed around him, and the smell of infection hung in the air.
Approaching carefully, we knelt beside him, speaking softly. He didn’t growl, didn’t bark—just looked at us, defeated.
No fight left. It was clear he had been there a long time, forgotten by the world. But we sensed he was so happy to see us and he knew we were saving him.
Convincing the people around to let us take him wasn’t easy. We had to reason, negotiate, and finally, they relented. When we unhooked the chain, he trotted merrily along with us. Somehow he new he was going to a new life. He even stopped to whiz on the post where he had been chained. Karma speaks!
The Battle for Survival
The vet visit confirmed our worst fears—severe malnutrition, dehydration, skin infections, and internal parasites. His blood work was all over the place, and the vet warned us that recovery wouldn’t be quick. But we had seen dogs come back from worse, and we weren’t about to give up on Pepe.
Medications, special food, medicated baths, and daily wound care became his new routine. Slowly, his body started responding. His perkiness and zest for life quickly showed itself.

So we began working with him, letting him learn, at his own pace, that no one would hurt him anymore. For the first time, he was receiving kindness and love, and in return, he showed us his gentleness, sweetness and willingness to trust.
Pepe’s Transformation
It didn’t take long–his fur grew back, soft and healthy. His eyes, once dull, turned bright and hopeful. The day he ran—really ran—across the yard, we knew he had made it. He was strong again and ready to embrace adventures.
And then came the best part: finding him a home. Not just any home, but one that would cherish him. A family that saw beyond his past and into his gentle soul. When we finally handed him over, there were tears—happy ones. Because Pepe wasn’t just saved; he was reborn.

He had gone from a forgotten soul chained to a tire to a beloved companion, proof that second chances are real. And that love, patience, and resilience can change everything.
This is but one of the stories that we at Los Perros Perdidos Foundation and Paws in Action Cancun get to experience first-hand. To see these neglected and sometimes abused dogs go from “mold to gold” is truly food for the soul.
